All the President's Men
I like Obama's choice for Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel. His skill set, philosophy, and temperament are just what the new President is going to need. Some have commented that Emanuel is too much of a Washington insider and too partisan, and his selection sends a bad message from a campaign that ran on a theme of change and unity. I disagree. While Emanuel can indeed be quite partisan, he, more importantly, has demonstrated a real tendency toward pragmatism, particularly on economic matters. He also has a solid track record of reaching across the isle to find solutions to tough, divisive issues. Obama's biggest challenge is going to be fending off the Party's most liberal elements and instincts. I think Emanuel recognizes that much of the pent up demand from years of minority status will have to be modulated in order to ensure another four years and not lose congressional seats in the mid-term election. Don't misinterpret, though. Obama is a Liberal with an agenda that is consistent with someone of that political persuasion. He will propose and help to enact liberal policies. He has every right, if not obligation to do so. I'm simply suggesting that Emanuel will be a moderating force who recognizes that it is not in the Democrats' long-term interest to acquiesce to the most radical leanings of the Party.

I see Emmanuel as the enforcer. He is probably the one individual that will keep the Pelosi/Reid machine from steam rolling the administration. Even tough he is as liberal as Obama I believe he is pragmatic and understands that a two term Obama administration will depend on compromise. He will have to convince the American people that policy action slightly left of center is better than no action at all.
