Mark-to-Market

Wouldn't the elimination of mark-to-market accounting go a long way toward ameliorating the credit crunch?  Afterall, Treasury's argument for why they may ultimately make money on the assets they purchase is largely based on the government's ability to hold said assets on their books for much longer periods of time than is currently feasible for corporations.  The elimination of mark-to-market would give corporations more flexibility to do the same.
